Rev. Lawrence Tetteh Apologizes To University of Ghana Over HIV Remarks

Spread the love

Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, founder of Worldwide Miracle Outreach, has apologized to the University of Ghana (UG) following statements he made on GTV’s Breakfast Show on October 24, 2024.

In his comments, Rev. Dr. Tetteh claimed that a significant number of UG students were HIV-positive, attributing this to alleged promiscuous behaviour on campus.

His remarks stirred concern, particularly when he said, “The number of young boys and girls in Legon, who are HIV positive, would shock you.”

The University of Ghana responded by stressing the importance of evidence-based discussions on HIV/AIDS, noting that misinformation could lead to unnecessary fear and stigma.

The university emphasized that only scientific methods, not speculation or anecdotal accounts, can accurately diagnose HIV. UG’s statement underlined that HIV status cannot be determined through counselling or prayer, stressing that “only scientific methods are valid for diagnosing infections,” cautioning against making public statements without data-backed evidence.

But in a statement dated 29, Rev. Dr. Tetteh expressed regret, clarifying that he did not intend to undermine the university or spread fear, stigma, or misinformation.

He explained that he aimed to highlight broader societal issues faced by youth and not to single out UG students.

Rev. Dr. Tetteh further clarified that his comments were drawn from his experiences counselling young people who share confidential information about personal struggles.

He reiterated his commitment to confidentiality and acknowledged the unintended impact of his remarks, expressing his sincere apologies to UG and the public for any distress his words may have caused.
