In a statement issued by the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Henry Quartey, the General Public was reminded that Friday, December 6th, 2024, which marks FARMERS DAY, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.
In Ghana, the first Friday of December is usually celebrated as Farmers Day and is a statutory public holiday.
Since it was introduced by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in 1988, the first Friday in December has been set aside to honour farmers and fishermen for their efforts in feeding the nation and recognise the vital contributions of a strong agricultural sector to the prosperity of the Ghanaian economy.
However, in election years when the first Friday falls closer to the December 7 date, for the presidential and parliamentary elections every four years, Farmers Day is celebrated earlier in November, but the statutory holiday stays at the first Friday of December.
This is why this year, the Interior Ministry’s statement clarifies that Friday, November 6, will be used to celebrate the 2024 Farmers Day; however, the public holiday will be observed on December 6, 2024.
