The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is experiencing a wave of significant setbacks as several high-profile Members of Parliament lose their seats to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

The defeats signal a shifting political tide, with only a handful of NPP MPs managing to retain their positions.

Major Losses for NPP

KT Hammond

Among the notable defeats is KT Hammond, the long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa, who polled 13,275 votes. He was unseated by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, who won with 14,229 votes. Mensah Abraham Justice of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) trailed with 346 votes.

Dakoa Newman

Dakoa Newman, the MP for Okaikwei South, also lost her seat, joining the ranks of prominent NPP casualties.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the MP for Ablekuma West, faced a disappointing performance, securing only 26,575 votes.

NDC’s Rev Kweku Addo won the Ablekuma West Constituency Parliamentary seat with 31866 votes.

Henry Quartey

In Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey was unseated by the NDC’s Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu. Quartey garnered 23,345 votes compared to Tubazu’s 29,755.

Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) received a mere 163 votes. A total of 53,550 votes were cast in the constituency, with 287 deemed invalid.

Sylvester Tetteh

Sylvester Tetteh, MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, lost his seat after receiving 27,888 votes. His opponent, Okle Felix Akwetey of the NDC, won decisively with 37,473 votes.

Twum Barima

In Dormaa East, Twum Barima, the incumbent MP, secured 12,050 votes but was narrowly defeated by Rachel Owusuaa of the NDC, who received 12,310 votes.

Ophelia Mensah Hayford

The Member of Parliament(MP) for Mfantseman and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ophelia Mensah Hayford, has lost her seat.

She was seeking re-election as a second-term MP and secured 23,349 votes in the election held on December 7.

Her main contender, Prince Ebenezer Arhin of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a first-time candidate polled 35,832 votes.

John Kobina Abbam Aboah Sanie

John Kobina Abbam Aboah Sanie, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Mpohor, has lost his seat to Bentil Godfred Henry of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a decisive victory.

Sanie, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 8,299 votes, while Bentil Godfred Henry secured 11,680 votes, marking a significant shift in the constituency’s parliamentary representation.

This outcome underscores the competitive nature of the 2024 elections, with the NDC making gains in several constituencies traditionally held by the NPP.

Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer

In Sekondi, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the incumbent Member of Parliament, has been defeated in a closely contested election by Blay Nyameke Armah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Egyapa Mercer, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total valid votes, while Blay Nyameke Armah secured 14,558 votes, corresponding to 56.40%.

Out of the 25,813 votes cast, 171 ballots were rejected.

NDC Gains Momentum

The NDC’s strong performance highlights a growing momentum in key constituencies, creating significant challenges for the NPP as they face the implications of these losses.

The results underscore the need for introspection within the NPP as the political landscape evolves.
