The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun has passed on.
The influential Islamic cleric suffered a brief illness and was rushed to the Emergency Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he passed on in the evening of December 17, 2024.
The late Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, 74, was buried at the Tafo Cemetery in Kumasi on Wednesday, December 18, around 4pm.
This was after Muslim prayers had been said for him by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuru Sharubutu at the Kumasi Central Mosque earlier the same day.
The deceased sheikh was said to have suddenly fallen sick in his house at Old Suame, in the Suame Municipality of Greater Kumasi around 8pm on Tuesday, December 17.
He was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for medical attention, but he unfortunately succumbed to death two hours on arrival at the hospital.
News of the demise of the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam sent shock waves among residents of Kumasi, where he is much respected due to his noble nature.
In accordance with Islamic traditions, Muslim prayers were said for the departed sheikh at the Central Mosque before burial, and it was massively attended by scores of people.
Prominent figures that attended the solemn ceremony, which was supervised by the National Chief Imam, included Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’ and some prominent figures in the party were also present at the ceremony.
The late Sheikh Abdul Haroun is remembered for his peace-loving traits, which made him the toast of followers of the Islamic community and other religious bodies in Kumasi.
He played important roles in the large and complex Islamic community in Kumasi, one of which is the establishment of the Ashanti Regional Peace and Reconciliation Committee which reports to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.
