The National Executive Council (NEC) of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is scheduled to convene on January 2, 2025, to deliberate on several critical matters in the aftermath of the 2024 general elections.
This meeting, which will be held at the party’s headquarters in Accra, marks the first official gathering of the NEC since the party experienced a colossal defeat in the December 7 general polls.
The electoral outcome has set the stage for intense introspection and strategic planning as the party transitions to its new role as the parliamentary minority.
Sources within the party indicate that one of the primary items on the agenda for the upcoming meeting is the leadership structure of the minority front in the 9th Parliament.
This issue has sparked widespread discussion among party members, with differing opinions on the path forward as the NPP navigates its new parliamentary position.
Among the many voices contributing to the debate is Joseph Osei Owusu, the current Member of Parliament for Bekwai and the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
Osei Owusu, alongside other party stalwarts, has strongly advocated for retaining Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the current Majority Leader, in a leadership role.
Many believe Afenyo-Markin’s experience, political acumen, and ability to foster unity within the party make him an ideal candidate to lead the NPP as the Minority Leader in the next Parliament.
The decision on the minority leadership is expected to be a contentious one, as it carries numerous implications for the party’s ability to project strength, unity, and influence in the 9th Parliament.
In addition to addressing parliamentary leadership, the NEC is anticipated to discuss other pressing concerns, such as the reasons behind the party’s electoral defeat, the reorganisation of party structures, and strategies for reconnecting with the grassroots base.
