The government has declared Tuesday, January 7, 2025, as a public holiday to mark Constitution Day.
Constitution Day as a new Public Holiday, was observed for the first time in Ghana in 2019.
The day was declared as a holiday under Section 2 of the Public Holiday Act, 2001 (Act 601).
January 7 marks the coming into effect of the 1992 Constitution and the birth of the Fourth Republic in 1993.
The designated holiday is intended to remind Ghanaians of their commitment to upholding the rule of law, constitutionalism, and democracy.
The public is, however, expected to observe the day as such.
The information was contained in a statement issued by the Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, on January 2, 2025.
The swearing-in ceremonies for John Mahama, the president-elect, and his vice president, Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, are scheduled for the same day (Tuesday, January 7, 2025)
John Mahama previously served as President of Ghana from 24 July 2012 to 7 January 2017 and Vice President of Ghana from January 2009 to July 2012.
He took office as president on 24 July 2012, following the death of his predecessor, John Atta Mills.
