VIDEO: NPP Triumphs In Tema Central, Okaikwei Central And Techiman South Constituencies After Final Collation

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has retained his parliamentary seat for Techiman South following a court-mandated collation of results conducted at the Electoral Commission’s (EC) regional office in Accra.

Korsah secured 46,663 votes, defeating Christopher Bayere Basongti of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who polled 43,429 votes.

This declaration comes in the wake of a High Court directive in Accra, which ordered the EC to finalize results in several constituencies, including Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South, by January 6, 2025. The court’s decision followed mandamus applications filed by NPP candidates to ensure transparency and the completion of outstanding collation processes.

Earlier, Charles Forson of the NPP was declared the winner for the Tema Central constituency after a recount of two outstanding polling stations, reinforcing the importance of thorough and accurate collation in determining election outcomes.

Korsah’s victory cements his position as the representative for Techiman South and underscores the High Court’s role in ensuring fairness and accountability in the electoral process.

Okaikwei Central

Incumbent Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah has been officially declared the winner for the constituency with 21,099 votes, defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Baba Sadiq, who polled 19,368 votes.

This declaration follows a High Court ruling in Accra that directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation of results in several constituencies, including Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South, by January 6, 2025.

Earlier Charles Forson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was also confirmed winner of the Tema Central constituency after a recount of two outstanding polling stations.

Forson secured 18,870 votes, narrowly defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Ebi Bright, who polled 18,815 votes, and Frederick Aniagyei, who received 209 votes.

The total valid votes stood at 37,894, with 144 rejected ballots, making the overall total votes cast 38,038.

The court’s ruling stemmed from mandamus applications filed by NPP candidates, compelling the EC to finalize incomplete collation results. Justice Forson Agyapong, in his ruling, outlined the legal grounds for mandamus, emphasizing that applicants must prove the failure to perform a public duty and show substantial prejudice as a result.

In the case of Okaikwei Central, the court found that the EC had not fulfilled its duty by declaring results based on only 110 out of 141 polling stations. The judge ordered that the missing results be included before a final declaration could be made.

Similar findings were made for other constituencies, including Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South, where incomplete results had been declared. Justice Agyapong’s decision ensures that all outstanding polling station results will now be incorporated into the final tallies for these constituencies.uencies.

Tema Central

Following a High Court directive on Saturday, January 4, the re-collation of two outstanding polling stations for Tema Central at the Accra Regional Office has confirmed Charles Forson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner.

Forson secured 18,870 votes, narrowly defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Ebi Bright, who polled 18,815 votes, and Frederick Aniagyei, who received 209 votes.

The total valid votes stood at 37,894, with 144 rejected ballots, making the overall total votes cast 38,038.

The High Court’s order required the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation of results in Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South by January 6, 2025. The court also mandated the Inspector General of Police to provide armed security during the collation exercises to ensure a peaceful process.

This ruling followed mandamus applications filed by NPP candidates in the affected constituencies, compelling the EC to fulfil its statutory duties. Justice Forson Agyapong, who presided over the cases, clarified the legal grounds for mandamus applications, including jurisdictional lapses, errors of law, and breaches of natural justice principles. He emphasized the EC’s obligation to perform its public duties without prejudice.

In Tema Central, the court determined that the EC failed to complete its duty by excluding two polling stations from the results. Justice Agyapong stated that only the returning officer’s declaration is legally valid.

For Ablekuma North, the EC had declared results from 219 out of 281 polling stations, leaving 62 uncollated. Similarly, in Okaikwei Central, results from 110 out of 141 polling stations were declared, while Techiman South saw results based on 135 out of 282 polling stations.

Justice Agyapong ordered the collation of all outstanding polling station results in these constituencies and their inclusion in the final declarations, ensuring compliance with electoral laws and the principles of fair representation.
