The Speaker of the yet-to-be dissolved 8th Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed gratitude to the President-elect of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama for endorsing his nomination for the role of Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

John Dramani Mahama in a press statement on Sunday, January 5, 2025, urged the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament to nominate the current Speaker, Alban Bagbin, for the role of Speaker in the next Parliament.

In a statement, Mr Mahama expressed confidence in the Speaker, and said he believes he possess the necessary experience to lead the new Parliament.

Alban Bagbin acknowledged the weight of this responsibility, describing it as both a profound privilege and an onerous duty.

He emphasized that this responsibility is one he does not take lightly, fully aware of the pivotal role the Speaker plays in Ghana’s democratic process.

“I am deeply humbled by His Excellency’s confidence in my ability to lead the august House as we begin a new chapter in our nation’s democratic journey,” the statement read.

He highlighted his years of dedicated service to Parliament and to the people of Ghana, affirming his unwavering commitment to the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.

As the new Speaker, he pledged to uphold these values while ensuring that the 9th Parliament operates with integrity, transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness.

“I will, more than before, rededicate myself fully to the task ahead of the country,” he said.

He said his goal is to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that Parliament remains effective in responding to the needs and aspirations of the Ghanaian people.

Alban Bagbin concluded by once again thanking the President-Elect, the national executives of the NDC, and NDC parliamentary leadership for the opportunity to serve another term as Speaker, vowing to continue his commitment to the nation’s growth and democratic values.

The nomination marks a significant step in the transition towards the next parliamentary session, as Ghana prepares for a new phase in its governance and democratic journey.

Meanwhile, the current 8th Parliament will be dissolved on January 6, to pave the way for the new parliament and the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, January 7.
