True Catholics Cannot Be Freemasons – Catholic Archdiocese Declares

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra has reaffirmed its stance that Catholicism and Freemasonry are incompatible, stating that no individual can be both a true Catholic and a Freemason.

In a recent statement signed by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, the Church clarified that its teachings on Freemasonry have not changed and remain in line with the “Declaration on Masonic Associations” issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1983.

The document explicitly states that “Masonic principles are irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church” and warns that Catholics who join Masonic associations commit a grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.

The Archbishop noted that Freemasonry contradicts key teachings of the Catholic faith, pointing out that it places Jesus Christ on the same level as other figures such as Buddha and Krishna and omits Christian prayers in its rituals.

Highlighting Proverbs 22:6, the Archbishop urged Catholics, particularly young adults, to seek guidance from the Church and resist associations that misrepresent Freemasonry as acceptable.

He cited Matthew 6:24, emphasizing that “no one can serve two masters,” and warned that Freemasonry undermines Christianity and the values of the Catholic Church.

The Archbishop concluded by calling on Catholics to remain steadfast in their faith and avoid all forms of Freemasonry, reminding them of the Church’s unwavering position.
