The Council of Zongo Chiefs in Sunyani has commended the government for reducing the Hajj fare.
The government yesterday announced a reduction in the fare for the annual Hajj pilgrimage from GH₵75,000 to GH₵62,000 for Ghanaian Muslims travelling to Mecca as fulfillment of campaign promise made before the 2024 elections.
According to Jascot Hawkins Alhassan, Secretary to the Sunyani Council of Zongo Chiefs, the decision is expected to increase Ghana’s quota for Muslim pilgrims.
Reacting to the reduction to Kaakyire Kwasi Afari on Thursday, Mr. Alhassan noted that Muslims did not anticipate the reduction, given the rising cost of living and goods and services in the country.
He reveals that initially, the Hajj fare was GH₵75,000, but additional payments and expenses increased the total cost to over GH₵100,000, a situation he described as worrying.
Jascot Hawkins Alhassan indicates that the announcement has brought significant relief to Muslims, saving GH₵13,000 that can be used for other expenses.
Jascot Hawkins Alhassan encouraged Muslims to take advantage of the reduced fare and embark on the Hajj pilgrimage, emphasizing its importance as an Islamic requirement.
He recommended that an advance payment should be made for potential visitors to book their visit for this year’s pilgrimage.
According to Jascot Hawkins Alhassan, barring unforeseen circumstances, Muslims will embark on a visit to Mecca in the month of May after the Ramadan celebration in February this year.
