NDC Holds Vigil Over Ablekuma North Parliamentary Election Result Delay

Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) staged a vigil on Sunday, February 9, 2025, to protest the prolonged delay in declaring the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

According to them, their candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, won the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections and demanded an official declaration.

Dressed in black, the protesters gathered at the forecourt of the Kwashieman Chiefs Palace, using the vigil as a platform to express their frustration over the electoral process.

Their protest followed the suspension of the collation process on January 17, 2025. The collation was halted after alleged acts of vandalism linked to the NDC, during which the collation centre at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission was ransacked.

The Electoral Commission had scheduled the collation of results for Friday, January 17, 2025. However, the process was disrupted when more than 40 individuals stormed the venue, ordered everyone to leave, and vandalized property, including louvre blades and doors.

Despite mounting pressure, the Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its constitutional independence, asserting that it cannot be coerced into declaring the results of the Ablekuma North parliamentary race outside due process.

The Commission emphasized that its authority is enshrined in the 1992 Constitution and that no amount of pressure or ultimatums from political groups will influence its procedures.

Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of Research at the EC, made this declaration following growing agitation from political parties and supporters of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC, who are demanding the immediate release of the constituency’s results.
