Sirigu SHS Students Use Gallons As Chairs During Examination

Final Year students of Sirigu Senior High School in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region are sitting on yellow gallons and broken pieces of furniture to write their end of term examination.

The situation, according to students and teachers, is adversely affecting the quality of teaching and learning.

According to the School authorities, several complaints on this situation were reported to the Ghana Education Service and the local government, but all efforts to solve these lapses have not been successful.

The school has a student population of 1,375, with girls being the majority of 734 and boys 641.

More than half of this population learns and writes exams under harsh conditions due to lack of furniture.

Lack of furniture is a key challenge in the education sector. The worse form is school under trees, where pupils/students sit on the bare floor under trees for lessons. There are instances where pupils even lie on their bellies to write notes.
