Chiefs, Residents Worried Over Kotoku Overlord, Police And Politicians Bias Attitudes Fueling Chieftancy In Akyem Ayirebi

The chief of Akyem Ayirebi in the Akyemansa district of Eastern region Obrempong Gyapire Asante III and some worried indigenes of the town have raised concerns over the bias attitudes of the police in the district, the Omanhene of Akyem Kotoku traditional area and some gurus in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area which is fueling chieftaincy dispute in the community.

According to Obrempong Gyapire Asante III and his people, there has been a chieftaincy disputes between the Royal families of Akyem Ayirebi for years now following an unlawful enstoolment of a rival chief who was allowed to be sworn in the presence of the Omanhene of Akyem Kotoku traditional area in his palace at Akyem Oda, knowing very well that there is a substantive chief in the town already.

The chief and his people alleged that due to the unlawful swearing in of the rival chief Kwadwo Gyimah under the supervision of Akyem Kotoku Manhene Oseadieyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, Akyem Ayirebi has not known peace for past years and it’s escalating into something horrific as people get brutalized and injured during funeral and other gatherings in the community.

The chief and his people further divulged that the police division in the Akyemansa district has also contributed to the fueling of chieftaincy disputes in Akyem Ayirebi since they have failed to apprehend violent people who terrorize persons from the other side which encouraged them to cause more harm to people because they are of the view that the police wouldn’t do anything to them even when arrested.

He added that for unknown reasons, several complaints of assault, threatening including threat of harm reported against Kwadwo Gyimah and his followers are never investigated by the Police.

They hinted that the Akyemansa district Police commander told Nana Sakyi (Gyaesoahene) that he is not interested to handle any complaints from the Queen mother/Obrempong Asante III’s side.

They lamented that the Police in the area are only interested in intimidating the Quenmother/Obrempong Gyapire Asante III and his faction.

The inaction of the Police have emboldened the rival Kwadwo Gyimah to unlawfully sell plots of land while the chieftaincy matter is before the Courts and the Regional House of chiefs.

The chief revealed that the rival chief Kwadwo Gyimah in his usual unlawful activities has hijacked funeral activities at Akyem Ayirebi with a gang who extorts Ghc2,000, drinks and sheeps from bereaved families before burial/funeral of a deceased which recently triggered violence in an ongoing funeral event at the community’s funeral grounds which led to some people severely injured and hospitalized

Requested Action

The chief and his people have therefore raised concerns that they foresee danger looming ahead at every funeral celebrations at the community centre and a possible violence/clash as events unfold if no action is taken immediately.

They added that in 2023 a letter was sent to DISEC and was advised that there is no chief at Ayirebi and that the Queen mother is the Regent. DISEC warned that none of the two chiefs should portray himself as the Chief of Akyem Ayirebi. However, one of the Chiefs flouted the orders of DISEC with impunity and his followers stir violence at the community centre at every funeral celebration.

In this view, they are therefore calling on the National Security Council, the highest Security Body in the country, to shut down the Ayirebi Community Centre from hosting funeral and Social activities as well as all the communication centres with immediate effect to help restore peace in the town.

Attached are pictures and videos of people injured during funeral events in Akyem Ayirebi.
