One person has reportedly lost her life, and two others sustained serious injuries following violent protests by some youth in Zabzugu, located in the Northern Region.
The unrest was sparked by opposition to the President’s nomination of Municipal and District Chief Executives.
The protesting youth expressed their disapproval of the nomination of Daniel Lakob Tanei. In response, they blocked roads and issued threats to destroy party properties and other government institutions.
Security personnel quickly intervened, but the situation escalated when the youth regrouped on the outskirts of the town, firing gunshots and harassing passersby.
During the chaos, a man riding a motorbike with two women — one of whom was seven to eight months pregnant — was stopped by the youth. When he refused to comply, they opened fire, killing the pregnant woman and injuring both the rider and the other woman.
The body of the deceased has been transported to the Yendi Hospital morgue, while the injured are receiving treatment at the Zabzugu Hospital.
Tensions remain high in the area, and security forces are on high alert to prevent further violence or possible reprisals.
