China has announced a new 125% tariff on US imports, marking a sharp increase from the 84% rate introduced on Wednesday, April 9. This move brings China’s tariff level in line with the current US tariff on Chinese goods.
This latest development follows US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 90-day pause on higher tariffs for dozens of countries. However, the US has moved ahead with an increase in tariffs on Chinese goods, raising them to 125%.
Earlier this month, President Trump introduced a “baseline” tariff of 10% on all countries while reserving higher rates for what he described as the “worst offenders.”
He explained that although the elevated rates would be suspended for 90 days, a “reciprocal tariff” of 10% would apply in the interim.
Despite the temporary pause for other nations, Trump emphasized that the tariff on China would still rise to 125%, citing what he called “the lack of respect that China has shown to the world’s markets.”
