Article: The Allure of Captain Ibrahim Traoré: Is Ghana’s Democracy Under Threat? – Prof. Mandora Writes

Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance has long been a beacon in West Africa. Yet, the recent wave of military takeovers in neighboring countries, including the 2022 coup led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso, presents a troubling paradox.

Given Ghana’s own painful history with military rule prior to the adoption of democracy in 1992, one would expect widespread rejection of such leaders by Ghanaian youth. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Across social media platforms, we see a growing chorus of admiration and praise for Captain Traoré and other military leaders, particularly among our young people in Ghana across the regions.

This raises a critical question: Has Ghana lost its faith in democracy? Or are our youth fundamentally misunderstanding the values at stake?

Why are young Ghanaians, who supposedly champion freedom of speech and human rights instead drawn to the leadership of military figures in neighboring nations?

This alarming trend serves as a clarion call to Ghanaian politicians and political leaders. They must restore the waning trust in democratic governance by leading with integrity and ensuring the responsible utilization of the country’s resources. Failure to do so risks a potential, yet largely hidden, threat to our cherished democracy.

The growing admiration for figures like Captain Traoré should be seen as a warning sign, urging us to strengthen our democratic institutions and address the underlying issues that fuel such sentiments.

Let us lead responsibly in our various ministries to sustain the very democracy we are enjoying.

So help our Motherland Ghana, God .
