VIDEO: 5 Killed In Shooting At Asiyaw Sand-Winning Site During Peace Talks

A shooting incident at an illegal sand winning site in Asiyaw Dobro in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri of the Eastern Region, has claimed the lives of at least five people.

The incident occurred during a meeting aimed at halting the destructive sand mining activities that have severely affected local farmlands and crops.

Community Protests Illegal Sand Winning

Farmers and residents had been protesting the impact of illegal sand winning on their livelihoods.

The community had grown frustrated with the destruction of their farmlands, which had affected crops like pawpaw, cassava, and maize.

The boundary chief of the Adonteng division, along with his subjects, visited the site to intervene after hearing the concerns of the affected farmers.

Armed Attack

However, upon their arrival, a group of armed men allegedly acting on orders by the sand-winning contractors Togbe Agar Sermaglo and Samuel Atsu Forson Alanyo to opened fire on the visitors, resulting in a chaotic scene and the deaths of at least five individuals.

Investigation Underway

The Nsawam police have launched an investigation into the incident and have declined to comment further until their inquiries are complete.

The police are working to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Community Demands Action

The incident has highlighted the need for urgent action to address the issue of illegal sand winning and its impact on local communities. The community is demanding that authorities take concrete steps to prevent further incidents and protect their livelihoods.
