VIDEO: Akyem Awisa Chief Leads Massive Clean-Up Exercise; Calls For Collective Cleanliness 

The Chief of Akyem Awisa Traditional Area in Birim South of the Eastern Region, Nana Ntifu Kwagyan III, spearheaded a massive clean-up exercise in his community to promote environmental cleanliness and emphasize the importance of sanitation.

Volunteers from various sectors, including residents, traders, and environmental groups, participated in the event.

The exercise aimed to engage the local community in efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment while highlighting the significance of proper waste management practices.

 

Community Unites For A Cleaner Environment

The exercise, which took place on Thursday, May 1, 2024, aimed to engage the local community in efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

In order to pave the way for a successful cleanup effort, stores and marketplaces were closed for approximately four hours throughout the exercise

The exercise included the picking of polythene bags, weeding, sweeping, gathering, disposing of refuse, and clearing weeds in the Awisa Township.

The chief togather with his elders, and the participants also took pains to desilt choked gutters along the major streets.

 

Call to Action & Appreciation 

Following the exercise, Nana Ntifu Kwagyan III, the Chief of Akyem Awisa and the Akyem Kotoku Akyempimhene, addressed the participants and the media, challenging residents to take full responsibility for cleaning their environment to ensure a healthy society.

To avoid illnesses, he also cautioned them against throwing rubbish indiscriminately.

He stated that the Traditional Area, which is under his leadership, has made a commitment to ensuring that its inhabitants live in a healthy environment devoid of untidy conditions.

He appealed to the government to address the sanitation crisis in the country and advocated for a national initiative to improve sanitation practices.

To encourage a culture of cleanliness, he supports wider cooperation and includes other stakeholders, such as traditional authorities and faith-based organizations.

He expressed his gratitude to all of the volunteers for their outstanding efforts during the cleanup exercise.

Concern Over Drug Abuse

Nana Ntifu Kwagyan III expressed deep concern over the growing trend of drug abuse among youth, whom he described as future leaders and potential parents.

He stressed that the fight against substance abuse requires collective action, warning that “Red is not a painkiller, it’s a life killer.”  He urged young people to stay away from drugs, warning that it could lead to serious health complications and even premature death.

He called on the government and stakeholders to intervene to curb the growing menace urgently, emphasizing that if urgent measures are not taken, Ghana’s reputation could be severely affected.

He urged religious leaders, traditional authorities, parents, and law enforcement agencies to join forces in fighting drug abuse among the youth.

He said that in order to safeguard the next generation’s future, a collective approach is required.

 

Honoring The Traditional Leaders

Hon. Regina Komtei, the Assembly member for Akyem Awisa, expressed her sincere appreciation to the chief and his elders for organizing the clean-up exercise.

She commended their efforts, stating that the initiative is a significant step towards promoting environmental cleanliness and sanitation in the community.

Hon. Komtei urged residents to support the chief’s initiatives and take ownership of their environment. She emphasized that a clean environment is crucial for the health and well-being of the community, and that collective efforts are necessary to achieve this goal. She encouraged residents to participate actively in future clean-up exercises and to take responsibility for maintaining their surroundings.
