Free SHS Must Stay: University Lecturers Campaign For Bawumia For Continuity

A group of university lecturers, known as University Lecturers for Free SHS, has launched a vigorous campaign to protect the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which they describe as a transformative intervention for the poor.

The group is advocating for the re-election of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming December elections, citing concerns that a change in government could jeopardize the policy’s future.

At a press conference held at the University of Cape Coast, Professor Isaac Boadi, Dean at the University of Professional Studies and convener of the group, highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s instrumental role in the initiation and implementation of Free SHS.

He argued that a Bawumia-led administration is best positioned to sustain and enhance the program.

Prof. Boadi also referenced criticisms of the policy by former President and NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, who had earlier described the policy as a failure.

The professor questioned Mahama’s ability to manage or improve the initiative, citing his previous opposition to its immediate implementation.

Implemented in 2017 under President Akufo-Addo, the Free SHS policy has benefited over 5.7 million students to date. Prof. Boadi urged Ghanaians to vote for continuity and resist attempts by Mahama to discredit the initiative.

“As university lecturers, we pledge our unwavering support for this initiative and are committed to advocating for its protection. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is poised to win the December elections,” Prof. Boadi declared.
