Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts & Culture,  Mark Okraku-Mantey has revealed a few of his ministry’s plans on improving tourism in Ghana.

He stated that local funerals can be part of tourism.

The former Programs Manager of Hitz FM made this revelation on Joy Entertainment’s Daybreak Hitz.

Describing it as “funeral tourism” Mr Okraku-Mantey said the Tourism, Arts & Culture Ministry has plans of paying close attention to using funerals as a way of boosting tourism.

He quoted Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, Minister for Tourism, Arts & Culture, who despite his stance as a Muslim, maintained a professional outlook regarding the issue.

“You [Christians] keep your bodies [corpse], and there are things you do that can attract people to go to a particular town,” he said.

Mr Mantey elaborated on saying “whether we like it or not, in the Ashanti Region, funeral is a big deal”.

The Ashanti Region is known for displaying rich culture and tradition during funerals, especially for prominent people in their land.

These traditions include a display of dance, fashion, music, food amongst others.

Focusing on such ventures promises to boost tourism in Ghana.
