Seven Members of Parliament, of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday came under attack when some suspected highway robbers attacked their convoy while on their way to an official engagement.
The incident reportedly took place on the Sampa-Mankraso highway in the Ahafo Region, when the robbers who under the cover of darkness, held several commuters and passengers hostage and robbed them of their belongings.
According to the report, the robbers using sophisticated weapons held their victims at gunpoint and succeeded in unleashing terror on their victims till an approaching headlight cut short their expedition.
The MPs using three V-8 vehicles occupied by 7 Members of Parliament on top speed threw their headlights on the highway robbers.
But despite the sound of the engines from the vehicles was not enough to dispel the robbers who opened fire on the MPs.
However, in a Rambo style display, the security detail of the MPs sensing danger also returned fire which forced the robbers who were not carrying enough weapons to flee the crime scene through the bushes.
The MPs have since lodged an official complaint with the Sunyani Police Command as investigations are ongoing.
The Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George after the incident on Thursday afternoon posted on his Facebook page by praising God for coming through for him and his colleagues and asked for the police to be offered all the needed support to fight the armed robbery menace especially as Christmas approaches.
He posted: “Thankful to the Almighty for the gift of life. Last night, his deliverance from the jaws of death for myself and 6 of my colleagues is a blessing we cannot repay. The menace of highway robberies is one we must seek to do more about. I am glad we were used as vessels to save over 40 other citizens who had been held at gunpoint.
Hopefully, the Ghana Police Service would be supported to do more to fight the cancer as we enter the yuletide. Still, we move!
