Growing up in a clean and safe environment is every child’s right. Access to clean water, basic toilets, and good hygiene practices not only keeps children thriving, but also gives them a healthier start in life.

In spite of the progress that has been made to ensure that children and families every part of the country have access to safe drinking water, data has shown that 76% of households are a risk of drinking water contaminated with faecal matter.

The Ghana Demographic and Health Survey reveals that while more than half of Ghanaian households have a designated place for washing hands, only about one household out of every five has water or other cleansing agents available at home.

The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate on 14 December, 2021, has held a stakeholders meeting to address issues on Water, Environment, Sanitation and Hygiene and to develop appropriate strategies for effective drinking water supply services, hygiene promotion and good sanitation.

Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang, the Ashanti Regional Health Director, has tasked stakeholders including Health Personnel, Media and Opinion Leaders to educate the people especially the young ones on a need for good sanitation and good hygiene.

“We always talk about good behavior and hygiene, so under this auspices we need to support the younger ones to adopt a behavior to promote their health by adopting good sanitation behavior so that they will be very conscious of the environment and the way they manage what they do to improve their health”.

This stakeholders meeting was in partnership with the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service and Environmental Department of the Regional Coordinating Council.

Dr. Tenkorang again revealed that the exercise will be carried on in only the Kumasi Metropolis, Kwadaso and Asokore Mampong Municipals but they will scale it up to other Districts and Municipals.

He said that, their core mandate is to engage the young ones especially those in the schools through the School Health Coordinators who have studied the environment and they will be giving the children the education on how to practice personal hygiene to curb the water related diseases.

The Regional Health Director, added that the Regional Coordinating Council with support from UNICEF will be providing the schools under this three Districts with the basic logistics to carry on with the exercise.

He finally took the opportunity and pleaded with Ghanaians especially those in the region to visit their nearest vaccination sites for the COVID-19 vaccination as we head to the festive season.
