Traders in Moro Market have demonstrated against the Old Tafo Municipal Assembly over an ultimatum by the Assembly to re-locate them within three weeks.
The traders embarked on the protest against a planned demolition and forced eviction of their shops at the market.
They alleged that, they have been given a three weeks grace period by the Old Tafo Municipal Assembly to vacate the market or risk getting their merchandise and properties destroyed.
The old Tafo Municipal Assembly has earmarked a plan to demolish the old age- Moro Market and reconstruct it with modern facilities.
The angry traders from Moro Market claim that they have gathered that as part of the plans for the reconstruction of the Moro market, the Tafo Municipal Assembly has also decided to demolish shops that contains the shoe makers at Moro Market.
The Moro Market was originally built solely for shoe makers and some vegetables vendors. But it has seen a number of shops constructed over there in the last 11 years.
Clad in red, the traders are chanting and kicking against the ultimatum.
The relocation is to make way for a new Moro Market to be constructed in Kumasi. The assembly has received World Bank fund for the contruction of the market.
Already the Old Tafo Municipal Assembly has already secured money to begin the project.
A member delegation from the Tafo Municipal Assembly and the Assembly Members in the Assembly has joined the market leaders and has familiarised themselves with prototype market.
On Friday 22nd, 2020, tens of angry traders chanted their frustration against the Municipal chief executive insisting the ultimatum is not enough.
