International Drivers and Road Transport Union (IDRTU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) says its earlier-announced 15 percent increase in their fares takes effect from Monday, June 27.

The Chairman of the union, Mr Kofi Sarpong confirmed to MyGhanaMedia.com.

The Union, therefore, urged all passengers to comply “and help us sustain our job”.

It also admonished its members to comply with the decision in order not to create “unwanted” back-and-forth with passengers.

The decision to increase fares was taken as a result of rising costs in fuel.

Meanwhile, the biggest driver union, GPRTU, is also contemplating increasing fares by the same percentage.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) Alhaji Abass Imoro, said on TV3‘s Keypoints on Saturday, June 25 that they are waiting to reach an agreement with the Ministry of Transport before announcing any increment.

“We are looking at increasing the transport fares by 15 percent,” Alhaji Imoro told sit-in host Alfred Ocansey.

“We are waiting on the transport ministry so that we reach a consensus.”
