Akoma FM, subsidiary of Media General and the fastest growing radio station in Ashanti Region and beyond, has mobilized total sum of GH¢4,157 within a period of 4 hours to support a traumatized Obuasi-based rape victim.

The presentation follows a sorrowful report of her condition after she was involved in an accident last month, leading to her left leg broken. This is how it all started:

On 9th November 2020, the victim, 24-year-old Justina Donkor, met a bitter encounter in her life after an alleged armed robber broke into her room and stole her money. The armed robber attempted to rape her but in the process of struggling with the rapist, she bit off the rapist’s penis.

Following the incident, the rape victim started receiving deaths threats which led to her relocation to Accra temporarily when the then Minister of Gender showed interest in the case.

But due to financial difficulties of staying in Accra, she returned to Obuasi to get a job again as a pupils teacher following the reopening of schools.

Indeed, radio gets results. After recounting her ordeal on Akoma FM‘s morning show GhanAkoma on Friday, February 12, her story touched hearts and listeners showed love as they donated money to support poor her and her family.

In less than 4 hours, a little over GH¢4,000 was mobilised from cherished listeners, who were touched by the sad story of Justina.

Another listener, a German-based lady called Joan promised to relocate the victim as she pledged to give out his house in Kumasi to Justina.

On Monday, February 15, a delegation led by Executive Producer of GhanAkoma Nana Asenso Mensah together with other team members moved to Obuasi and presented the cash to the victim and her family.

On the rape case, which is in court, mother of victim Hannah Owusu spoke about the slow pace and said she and her daughter have lost interest in it.

Madam Owusu, who was full of gratitude, showered blessings on the donors.

“My family and I are most grateful to Akoma FM and its cherished listeners for coming through to help us. We are indeed grateful this is what we call responsible journalism for development.”

She further spoke about the psychological trauma her daughter has been going through, expressing worry also about the suicidal thoughts she has been having as she pleaded for immediate psychological therapy to relieve her daughter from the constant trauma she’s faced with.
