NPP Likely To Break ‘First Come First Serve’ Tradition For Dr. Bawumia – Pol. Analyst

A senior lecturer at the Political Science department of KNUST, Prof. Samuel Adu Gyamfi, has said Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is leading his counterparts in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.

The Professor from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) says it is likely the NPP will for the first time breach its “first come first serve” approach of electing their flagbearers.

Speaking on the resignation of Alan Kyerematen as Trade and Industry minister on TV3’s Midday Live Friday, January 6, 2023, Prof. Adu Gyamfi said the tradition that made Alan Kyerematen lose several primaries to Akufo-Addo is likely to be altered this time around.

“We’ve learnt that the NPP has followed some particular tradition – ‘first come, first serve’ — basis to elect their leaders. That is the reason why Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen would lose several times against his elders.

“It seems to me that around this time they want to change the narrative and rather provide a levelled playing field for all. Because if they were going to follow the old narrative to elect leaders, then Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen ought to have been the one they would definitely go for but it doesn’t seem to be the narrative around this time,” he indicated.

His assertion, he added is based on the stance and composure of some key stakeholders in the party.

“It seems to me that the President himself, other key stakeholders of the party, some Chairmen or a particular Chairman of the party seem to have already take his leg out for a particular candidate” adding that, “the Vice President himself has also been on the ground working like Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has been doing.”

According to Prof. Adu Gyamfi, Dr. Bawumia’s approach to touch base with the grassroots coupled with his familiarization with religious based groups “sometimes preaching the gospel on the pulpit of renowned or astute prophets” has gone a long way to cushion his bid.

“And so he has seized the opportunity of being who he is maybe with some sense of charisma and the sense of the office he holds and all that to push himself to the forefront,” he relayed.
