Ghana’s dream of winning the African Nations Championship (CHAN) for the first time at the 2022 edition was shattered by Niger in the quarter-finals on Saturday evening.

The Black Galaxies succumbed to a 2-0 loss to their West African counterparts in the quarter-final stage of the 2022 CHAN at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran, Algeria.

The Nigeriens dominated the early minutes of the game and the intense pressure mounted on the Ghana defense paid off with an opener through an own goal.

On the 11th minute, Hearts of Oak defender Konadu Yiadom scored at a wrong net to give Niger a 1-0 lead after failing to deal with an audacious strike from Imarana Dan Baro.

The Black Galaxies looked hopeful of levelling the score before the break but a compact backline of the Nigeriens ensured not to commit any blunder as the first half ended in a 1-0 for them.

In the second half, Niger continued their dominance over the locally based national team of Ghana to double their lead before the hour-mark.

Talented attacking midfielder Soumana Hainikoye extended the lead for Niger with a superb strike which saw goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad crawling in his net.

Ghana coach Annor Walker made five changes in the second half with the introduction of Gladson Awako, Sheriff Mohammed, Kwame Otu, Augustine Boakye and Benjamin but their inclusion couldn’t earn the Galaxies even them a shot on target in the entire duration of the game.

The Black Galaxies kept struggling to capitalize on the set-pieces awarded to them in the second department of the game as it ended in a 2-0 win for Niger.
