Farmers working along the White Volta River in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region, have been advised to cultivate early maturing crops to avoid their crops being submerged by floods.

The Bawku West District Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Daniel Atampuba Anania urged the famers to learn from previous years’ experience, and avoid the temptation of farming close to the river bank.He stressed that farming close to the river bank comes with great risk to farmers, since they could lose their investments to floods, hence, the need for farmers to heed to the advice.

Mr. Anania reiterated that since he took over as the District Director of NADMO, a number of sensitization programs have been organized for farmers and people living along the White Volta to create awareness about the risk involved in farming close to it.He said the spillage of the Bagre dam in neighbouring Burkina-Faso usually pose a great risk to farmers annually, hence the reason for the sensitization.

Mr. Anania said that NADMO is working to ensure that all farmers farming along the White Volta adhere to safety protocols, adding that the role of NADMO is in tune with contemporary sensitization, with the ultimate goal of adverting any casualty when an unforeseen disaster strike.

Over the years, some farmers in the district have lost their farm produce and in a few cases some lives are lost due to non-adherence to technical advice from NADMO.

Mr. Anania stated that there is nothing NADMO can give to disaster victims which can be equal to what they already have, or will lose in the event of disasters, hence the need for farmers to protect their investments.
