Sir John Writes To The NPP On Republic Day

As today marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s history, as it commemorates the establishment of our beloved nation as a sovereign republic in 1960, the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) Constituency First Vice Chairman in the Atwima Nwabiagya South, Hon. John Kwame Duodu, affectionately called Sir John, has seized the opportunity to appeal to the rank and file of the NPP not to be disheartened by their recent loss in the Assin North by-elections.

 

According to him, “Instead, they should perceive this setback as a valuable lesson, shedding light on their weaknesses. It is only by acknowledging and addressing these shortcomings that they can fortify themselves for the upcoming 2024 general elections and prevent the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from exploiting any vulnerabilities”.

 

Sir John, who is also the Ashanti Regional Patron of TESCON, added that even though he understands the frustration and agitation of all New Patriotic Party members at the moment, he implored them to express their concerns with utmost civility.

 

In a press statement sighted by MyGhanaMedia.com, he stated, “While he understands the frustration and disappointment of their members, he further imploded them to express their concerns with utmost civility and decency. He added that they must not provide the NDC with any ammunition to undermine them in the future. We still have sixteen months ahead of us to rectify our mistakes and break the eight-year cycle.”

Today marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s history, as it commemorates the establishment of our beloved nation as a sovereign republic in 1960. On this occasion, we must reflect upon the remarkable achievements of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) since its inception, from the days of the United Party (UP) to the present, where President Nana Addo diligently builds upon the legacies of President Busia and President Kufuor.

In my esteemed positions as the NPP Constituency First Vice Chairman of the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency and the Ashanti Regional TESCON Patron, I seize this opportunity to rally our party members and encourage them not to be disheartened by our recent loss in the Assin North by-elections.

Instead, let us perceive this setback as a valuable lesson, shedding light on our weaknesses. It is only by acknowledging and addressing these shortcomings that we can fortify ourselves for the upcoming 2024 elections, preventing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from exploiting any vulnerabilities.

While I understand the frustration and agitation of our party members, I implore them to express their concerns with utmost civility. We must not provide the NDC with any ammunition to undermine us in the future. We still have a generous sixteen months ahead of us to rectify our missteps and shatter the eight-year cycle.

The possibility of the NPP’s success remains within our grasp. On this joyous Republic Day, I extend my warmest wishes to all of us.

Let us continue to work diligently, united in our cause, as we strive to safeguard the principles and values upon which our great nation was founded.

What is Republic Day in Ghana?

 

This commemorative in Ghana and is celebrated on 1st July. This holiday commemorates Ghana becoming a republic on 1 July 1960.

Until 2019, Republic Day was a public holiday. Under the Public Holiday Amendment Bill which was passed in March 2019, Republic Day becomes a commemorative day.

History of Republic Day

Before the arrival of Europeans, Ghana was the location of the Ashanti, a powerful tribe in the region. The area had an abundance of natural resources, including gold and ivory, which attracted the attention of colonists. While the Portuguese had been the first to establish a settlement in the region, the attractiveness of the local riches led to a struggle for control between many European nations. In 1874, Britain took control over parts of the country, naming them the British Gold Coast.

Weakened by the efforts of World War II and a rising desire for independence, Britain began the process of reducing its colonies around the world, including those in Africa.

Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence, on March 6th 1957.

Three years later, Prime Minister Osagyefo Dr. Kwame was sworn into office as the first President of the country and the republic was proclaimed on July 1st 1960.

How is Republic Day Celebrated?

Republic day has also become Senior Citizens’ Day, a day to recognise the efforts and contributions of senior citizens to modern Ghana.
