Attack On Citi FM/TV Journalist By NDC Thugs: Hypocrisy of GJA, MFWA – Kwabena Frimpong Fumes

Mr. Kwabena Frimpong, the Deputy Director of Protocol at the National Headquarters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the Media Foundation for West Africa ( MFWA), and numerous media outlets for their silence regarding the attack on a journalist from Citi TV and Citi FM by National Democratic Congress (NDC) thugs.

He contends it is extremely concerning that organizations like the Media Foundation for West Africa and GJA, among others, have kept quiet about this upsetting incident involving the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In his opinion, some border-related issues in the nation have not received fair criticism.

He stated, “If it had been the NPP, hell would have already broken loose on us (NPP) by now,” in a statement obtained by MyGhanaMedia.com.

Below is a statement from Mr. Frimpong.

Today, October 13, 2023, an unfortunate incident unfolded at the NDC’s Regional Office at South La during the vetting of parliamentary candidates, where a female journalist, Akosua Otchere of Citi FM, was subjected to a vicious assault. It is deeply concerning that organizations such as GJA and Media Foundation for West Africa, among others, have remained silent about this distressing incident involving the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

What is truly disheartening is the prevailing silence from various quarters, simply because the responsible individuals belong to the NDC. If it had been the NPP, hell would have broken loose by now on us(NPP).

Instead of impartially discussing the matter, numerous media outlets, Groups and self-acclaimed Apostles seem to have been quiet. It is essential that we foster an environment where issues are deliberated objectively and unbiasedly. The Silence of GJA, Media Foundation for West Africa, et al is very worrying when your colleague has been assaulted.

My thoughts and well wishes are with Akosua Otchere, and we sincerely hope for her swift recovery. Let’s all collectively strive for a more inclusive and responsible media landscape

Background

A journalist of Citi TV and Citi FM, Akosua Otchere, was on Friday, October 13, 2023, attacked while covering the vetting of the parliamentary candidate hopefuls of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Odododiodio constituency in Accra.

Ms. Otchere was attacked by some NDC thugs, who twisted her hand and snatched her phone.

This happened when members of one of the candidates’ camps destroyed party property, including chairs and an air conditioner, and pelted stones at the vetting committee, citing unfairness on their part.

The chaos occurred at the NDC’s Greater Accra Regional office in South La, where three individuals—Nii Okai Laryea, Kotey Ashie, and Michael Nii Yarboi Annang—were facing the committee in the hope of succeeding the incumbent MP, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, who is not seeking re-election.

The Odododiodio Constituency was unable to participate in the February 2023 vetting exercise due to outstanding issues that the party needed to resolve.

Friday’s vetting was to determine the fate of the three aspirants for the party’s parliamentary primary, which is slated for Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
