The Government of Ghana, through the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA), has announced the minimum farm gate buying price for cashew for the 2023–2024 season, which begins in late December.

The government decided to peg one kilogram at Gh₵7 following multiple meetings with all parties involved in the cashew value chain, according to Hon. William Agyapong Quaitoo, CEO of the Tree Crops Development Authority.

During a brief ceremony held on Friday in Kintampo in the Bono East Region to formally announce the start of this year’s cashew season, Hon. William Quaitoo disclosed that the price had reduced from Gh₵8.5 of last year because of the current Cedi to Dollar exchange rate.

He continued that the declining quality of Ghana’s cashew nuts and the commodity’s pricing on the global market are further factors contributing to the price decrease.

In order to guarantee quality and fetch higher prices on the international market, Mr. Kwabena Owusu, National Organizer of the Cashew Traders and Exporters Association of Ghana, begged farmers and buyers to make every effort to adequately dry the nuts prior to export.

Finally, some cashew producers voiced their disappointment after hearing that the price had decreased.
