Mr. Sylvester Opoku Fofie, widely recognized as Papa Sly, a defeated parliamentary candidate aspirant of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Afigya Sekyere East constituency, has declared his intention to go independent.
This follows after he emerged second to the incumbent MP, Mavis Nkansah Boadu at the just-ended NPP Parliamentary Primary held on 27th January 2024.
Papa Sly believes that the activities preceding the election led to the manipulation of votes, which harmed his prospects of winning.
Addressing the press on Thursday, Papa Sly alleged that some of the delegates had received money from his competitor amid some curses that forced them to vote for the incumbent.
He added that after he wins the seat as an independent candidate, he will declare his allegiance back to the NPP.
Speaking at the press conference held in Agona, Mr. Opoku Fofie emphasized that the NPP’s major wings and the current member of parliament, Hon. Mavis Nkansah Boadu, used curses to terrorize and intimidate the party delegates after offering them a substantial sum of money in exchange for their votes. He maintains this to be against the party’s policies and procedures.
He asserted that by running as an independent for parliament, he would contribute to ending the barbaric custom of using swear words in local politics.
He continued by saying he would re-establish his commitment to the NPP if he managed to win the seat as an independent.
In an effort to put an end to the uncultured habit of curses in the area, some party members and locals applauded his choice and stated they were prepared to cast large numbers of ballots in his favor.
