Erstwhile Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Presiding Member and Professor in Agribusiness, Professor Robert Aidoo, has outlined the pros and cons of the dismissal of twenty-four (24) district chief executives by President Akufo Addo.
According to him, the President’s decision to revoke the appointments of the district chief executives (DCEs), with just ten months to go to the 2024 general election, will have little or no effect.
He added that the president ought to have made this choice a long time ago and that the timing might not be the best for the government.
Professor Robert Aidoo further said that the move could still send shivers down the spine of individuals who have become too comfortable in their roles.
He claims that the ratification of the newly appointed DCEs may be delayed in areas where the Assembly members are embroiled in controversies, which could impede the growth of those districts.
He added that certain districts must first elect their presiding member before they can ratify the newly appointed district chief executives and that the newly elected Assembly members have not yet been sworn in.
According to Professor Robert Aidoo, choosing the presiding member can be even more difficult in some districts.
For this reason, we should hope that the Assembly members will be willing to make concessions in order to approve the DCE nominations.
