Enough Is Enough – NDC Youth Group Goes Unruly Over Running Mate Saga

Some youth of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have expressed concern over the lack of autonomy for the party’s presidential candidate, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, in selecting his running mate.

More than 10 influential figures within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are reportedly vying for the position, with similar lobbying efforts taking place among regional groups such as NDC opinion leaders in the Central Region.

Some supporters in the Central Region have specifically urged the presidential candidate to choose someone from the Central Region for the second time as the running mate.

The NDC has consistently chosen its vice presidential candidate from the Central Region, as it has repeatedly done since 1992 from the days of ( Arkaah ).

The NDC selected the late Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur as well, a Central Region native and Former Vice President, as its presidential candidate companion in the 2016 General Election.

Then prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, another candidate from the Central Region, served as the party’s running mate in the 2020 general election.

They were both picked by Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the same presidential contender who is vying for office a third time.

The widespread consensus among NDC members ahead of the 2024 general election is that the party’s selection of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Mahama’s running mate in 2020 was a mistake that prevented the NDC from winning both the Central Region and the entire country. Many of the NDC faithful believe that repeating her as the party’s running mate will add little to the party’s ticket and may not yield any political benefit to the NDC or improve its fortunes in the December 2024 general election.

Thus, Mr. Mahama may not want to nominate Prof. Jane Naana as his running mate yet again, according to a release issued by a group identifying itself as “NDC  Youth Caucus for JM 2024 .”.

The group stated in their statement that, in light of current political trends and the region’s growing significance to the electoral fortunes of the opposition NDC, the party’s flagbearer now favors an Ashanti native or Easterner to be his running partner.

The group’s leader, Mr. Mohammed Sandirii, signed the statement, which also noted that Kwamena Ahwoi, Totobi Quarkyi, and Kwame Peprah are putting greater pressure on the flagbearer to take into consideration Kwesi Ahwoi, a former Interior Minister and native of the Central Region, as opposed to Prof.Jane Naana.

According to them, “This is what they are doing behind the camera with threats and so on. They are doing this for the reason that they won’t agree for the running mate slot to go to any other region apart from the Central Region.

They emphasized the importance of allowing the party’s flagbearer the autonomy to choose his running mate, believing it would benefit the party’s unity and success.

The group expressed confidence in Mahama’s judgment and decision-making abilities.

They urged the public to grant the former president the space needed to make an informed and strategic choice in the interests of the party and country.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH – NDC PARTY YOUTH TO THE AHWOIS

There is a certain turn of events going on now behind the cameras, and we want to put some spotlight on some of our party leaders for them to be aware that the base of the party is aware of their hatchet plans.

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is having a change of mind to change Prof. Jane Naana for a new running mate, preferably from Ashanti or Eastern Region, looking at the electoral trends and how strategic the regions has become to the electoral fortunes of the opposition NDC.

Unfortunately, the following people: Kwamena Ahwoi, Totobi Quarkyi, and Kwame Peprah, are mounting pressure on him to rather consider Kwesi Ahwoi if he isn’t going with the woman again. This is what they are doing behind the camera with threats and autumatum to the flagbearer.

They are doing this for the reason that they won’t agree for the running mate slot to go to any other region apart from the Central Region.

The point here is that the choice of running mate is purely the responsibility of the flagbearer and on the advice of the Council of Elders and NEC.So nobody can, and should force the flagbearer to make a choice that wouldn’t serve the party’s and country’s interests.

The party’s rank and file have questioned the contributions of the Ahwois to the party at the base because they have been huge beneficiaries in the party since 1992 till date, but their contributions towards the party’s activities are nothing to write home about.

There are many party leaders whose contributions are known and are always in the public domain. They spend millions of dollars and cedis to ensure the party stays afloat, especially in difficult times, but that cannot be said of the Ahwois.

Kwesi Ahwoi, who today is projected to be the running mate out of extremely pure selfishness, lost an election to a woman when he was a Minister, and this does not communicate anything to the Ahois??

Kwame Peprah, who is an Ashanti and has joined such an unproductive agenda, cannot point to his constituency or his contributions to the party.

The ranks and file of the party are saying enough is enough. The Ahois and their asigns have benefited from the party since its formation and so must allow the party some breathing space to grow in the right direction. They shouldn’t muddy the waters for the party support base as their main focus is to work hard for JM  to win power in 2024 to come and save Ghana from the inept Nana Addo Government.

The youth of the party wouldn’t agree with anybody who would want to force His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to choose a running mate of their choice. He should be allowed to do what he thinks would best serve the interests of the party and country.
