The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman constituency, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, denounced the truck driver who abandoned his vehicle on the Tema-Mpakadan rail lines, resulting in the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) accident that occurred at Aboatia in the North Tongu district on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
He chastised the truck driver for attempting to cross the unauthorized rail tracks.
He does, however, think that the contractor needs to reevaluate the large vehicle access routes to the communities situated along the rail lines.
This is because, in his opinion, people will unavoidably need to cross the railway lines because there are buildings on both ends, and looking at the passage that has been provided is not enough.
Mr. Thomas Ampem Nyarko said that the Ghana Railways Development Authority and the Ministry of Railways Development ought to have examined the rail lines prior to the test run.
In his view, it is also critical to involve the residents of the communities situated along the rail lines in order to inform them of what will happen, as not all individuals are aware of the protocol when the train is approaching.
He felt worried about the perception that some person or group of people were liable for the train accident by means of sabotage the government project.
He stressed that the recent accident should not be turned into a political issue. While acknowledging the unfortunate nature of the incident, he emphasized that it should be taken as a lesson to implement better safety measures in the future.
He made this statement when he visited the scene.
