Home regions of presidential candidates are typically considered “no go zones” for opponents; and however, vice president and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawuma, braved the odds and invaded Savannah, the home region of former president and opposition National Democratic Congress flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
The Savannah Region is the eighth of Dr. Bawumia’s national engagements.
The nationwide tour, which began on Monday, April 29, has seen the Vice President visit the Eastern, Western, Western North, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, and North East Regions, since he started his regional community engagements, where he has had engagements on the streets, in the markets, shops, and house-to-house interactions.
On Monday, May 13, Dr. Bawumia and his team began a five-day campaign tour of the five northern regions, starting from his home region, the North East Region.
He continued his campaign tour to the Savannah Region on Wednesday, 15th May, 2024, with street and house-to-house interactions.
The campaign tour proved to be an incredible experience, with the people extravagantly welcoming Dr. Bawumia.
He was received by a large crowd of people from all walks of life, including market women, teachers, nurses, artisans, and children.
Scores of people, both young and old, poured out in their numbers, chanting songs in support of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
As tradition demands, the Vice President began his tour of the Region with a visit to the overlord of Gonjaland and the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs.
Welcoming the Vice President to the Region, the overlord of Gonjaland and President of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, said Dr. Bawumia is one of the illustrious sons of the Gonja Kingdom, who has contributed immensely to the development of the Kingdom.
He given his blessings to the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to be the next President of Ghana.
He said Dr. Bawumia is a true son of Gonjaland and has the blessings of the Chiefs and people of the Kingdom to lead the nation.
He specifically thanked the Vice President for his role in seeing to the creation of the Savannah Region, which gave birth to the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs.
The Yagbonwura assured the Vice President of his support and that of the Region and wished him well in the upcoming General Elections.
The King said this when the Vice President and some party officials called on him and the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs as part of the Vice President’s nationwide campaign tour ahead of the December General Elections.
The King called on political parties to conduct their electioneering campaigns with civility and decency and avoid insults and provocative language. He also advised the youth to avoid actions, conducts, and behaviours that have the tendency to plunge the country into any form of confusion, acrimony, and armed conflicts.
The vice president also engaged people at the Yapei toll booth, Fufulsuo Market, and lorry station as well as community members in Busunu.
Addressing members of the clergy in the Savannah Region today, 15 May 2024 as part of his campaign tour of the region, Dr Bawumia stated that it is his vision to create a country that will depict “a tent big enough” to include everyone in the transformation of the country.
He reiterated his commitment to transforming Ghana with the support and mandate of the people of Ghana.
“My vision for this country is to create a tent that is big enough so that we can involve everybody, include everybody, and transform this country. I have several ideas that I want to bring into operation,” Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia said.
The NPP leader further called on the clergy in the Savannah Region to support him and to pray for him as he travels across the country in search of the mandate of the people.
Touting some of his achievements as the current Vice President of the land, Dr Bawumia said, “Let me tell you that Ghana has taken leadership in medical drone delivery in the world. Ghana is the largest medical drone delivery service in the world.
“Recently they came to recruit somebody from Ghana to take him to San Francisco to lead a team of drone flight operators from Ghana, because they have the best experience here from Ghana to San Francisco that he’s now there working, imparting his experience,” Dr Bawumia said.
“I’ve been doing quite a bit as Vice President and I am saying all of this just to make the point that if I have been able to do all this as Vice President, then I believe if you make me president, I’ll be able to do much, much more for this country” The NPP presidential candidate added.
He was accompanied by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel A. Jinapor, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, and several other party officials.
