2024 Elections: Has GFP Pulled Out of The Presidential, Parliamentary Race? – Fact Check

The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) is facing internal turmoil as two factions have issued contradictory letters to the Electoral Commission (EC) regarding the party’s participation in the December 7 general elections.

Following the death of Akua Donkor last week, the founder and presidential candidate of the party, the Electoral Commission gave the GFP up to Friday, November 8, 2024 to nominate a replacement.

Designation

In one letter, the General Secretary of the GFP, George Afful officially notified the EC of the party’s decision to endorse Mr. Philip Kwabena Agyemang Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, as their presidential candidate.

“I hereby write to inform the Commission that the party has duly nominated Mr Philip Appiah Kubi to replace our late Presidential Candidate for the 2024 elections.

“His name Is hereby submitted to the Commission in line with your request in the letter under reference,” the statement read.

The statement further said that the nomination of the new presidential candidate will be filed by the party within the stipulated time frame in accordance with the law.

This decision complies with the EC’s directive, which instructed the GFP to nominate a new presidential candidate within 10 days, in line with Article 40(4) of the 1992 Constitution.

Nomination Filling

The party has officially filed Mr. Philip Kwabena Agyemang’s nomination to the Electoral Commission. On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in the afternoon, it was submitted.

Roman Fada was Akua Donkor’s vice presidential candidate who has now been nominated by the GFP to replace her.

Contradictory letter

However, another letter from the party’s National Organiser, Richard Botchway stated that, after consulting with Akua Donkor’s family, the GFP had decided to withdraw from the presidential race entirely.

“We are by this letter formally informing the Commission of our intention not to participate in the elections.

“Any inconveniences this decision may have caused the Commission and its calendar for the December 7 elections is deeply regretted,” the statement read.

The statement further said that the party will be ready to participate in any future elections organised by the Electoral Commission.

The internal conflict within the GFP now raises significant implications for the party’s potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.

Response

Meanwhile; the General Secretary of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), George Afful, has refuted assertions in the media that the party has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential election.

He stated that the letter which was signed by the party’s National Organiser, Richard Botchway was fake.

He slammed the organizer of the party, calling him a criminal.

“It is fake news that we have withdrawn. At 1:07 pm at the Electoral Commission, we have successfully filed our nomination. Philip Appiah Kubi is our candidate”.

“He (the National Organiser) is a criminal. He is a criminal,” he said.

He indicated that the GFP has officially nominated Philip Appiah Kubi (Roman Fada) to replace the late Akua Donkor as the party’s presidential candidate.

Madam Akua Donkor died on October 28 at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
