GFA Apologises for Black Stars’ AFCON Fiasco

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has apologised to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a press statement, the GFA expressed its disappointment over the unsuccessful campaign, acknowledging the heartbreak it has caused fans across the nation.

“We understand the disappointment and frustration this failure has caused, and we share in the pain and sadness of our beloved fans,” a portion of the statement read.

The 2025 AFCON, set to take place in Morocco from December 23, 2025, to January 18, 2026, marks the first time since 1988 that the North African country will host the continental competition. Twenty-four nations will battle for the title, with Cote D’Ivoire as the defending champion.

Ghana’s qualification campaign ended dismally, as the Black Stars finished at the bottom of Group F without a single victory in six matches. The team’s poor performance included failing to secure any home wins, a shocking low point for the once-dominant football nation.

Key results in the campaign included a 1-0 loss to Angola in Kumasi, a goalless draw against Sudan, and a 2-1 defeat to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In response to the disappointing outcome, the GFA’s Executive Council convened on Wednesday, November 20, to deliberate on the team’s future.

Despite widespread criticism, the council resolved to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, entrusting him with the responsibility of rebuilding the team.

This marks a challenging chapter in Ghanaian football history, with fans now looking to the GFA and team management to restore the Black Stars’ glory.
