On Wednesday, November 4th, 2024, Hon. Samuel Alberto Tekyi, the former District Chief Executive (DCE) of Wassa Amenfi West, held a press conference at his house in Asankrangwa Newtown, engaging with representatives from Greengold FM/TV, Velvet Beam, Pent TV, and Pazion Media.

His address served a dual purpose: to promote a peaceful election and to provide a detailed account of the significant developmental strides achieved in Amenfi West, particularly under the NPP Government.

Following his call for peaceful elections, Hon. Tekyi, also the Director of IBS Educational Complex, addressed misinformation spread by some NDC supporters. While affirming his allegiance to the NPP, he emphasized the contributions of all governments to national progress, acknowledging varying levels of effectiveness depending on their policies.

He then embarked on a comprehensive historical overview of Amenfi West’s political and developmental trajectory.

Refuting claims of neglect by the NPP, Hon. Tekyi meticulously documented the contributions of the NPP Government in Amenfi West. He highlighted the late President Rawlings’ initiation of the main road leading to Amenfi West, which ended at Manso Amenfi Cemetery.

He then detailed the significant advancement achieved under President Kufuor’s administration, with the tarring of the road from Manso Amenfi to Asankrangwa, following Aliu Mahama’s sod-cutting ceremony in 2002.

Hon. Tekyi provided context for the naming of Mota Suburb in Asankrangwa, explaining its origin as a settlement for the Portuguese road construction company, Mota, responsible for building the Bibiani-Bekwai road. He recounted how the chiefs of Asankrangwa provided land for the company near the current nursing training college.

He explained the stalled progress on the Manso-Asankrangwa road, revealing that the Mota company’s withdrawal resulted from the absence of this project in their contract. Following the company’s departure, he (Hon.Samuel Tekyi) wrote to the Mota company to take over their land at Mota which was abandoned to the community, which was later used by Indigo, a Cola-nut Company.

Hon. Tekyi detailed his own contributions during his tenure as DCE. He took credit for the extension of electricity to Samreboi, Asuohyiam, Affiena, Yirase, and Oda; the construction of the road to Affiena, facilitating the arrival of the first motorbike in the area.

He said the late JFK Oppong’s son-Nana, a motor repairer whose filling station is at Bogoso Prestea Junction was the first person to enter Affiena with a motorbike and they showered him with powder. He also talked about the road construction projects to Afriyiekrom and Bokakore.

He also underscored his role in the tarring of the Asankrangwa-Breman road, the first tarred feeder road in Wassa Amenfi, following a vehicle audit in 2003.

He also credited the Kufuor administration with initiating the nursing training college in Asankrangwa, detailing its funding through a combination of Assembly funds, a GHC 15,000 grant from the Ministry of Health (formerly 150 million old Ghana cedis), and contributions from various church committees and the late Nana Tandoh, the committee chairman.

Hon. Tekyi also highlighted his role in constructing five workshops at Asankrangwa Secondary Technical School (ASECTECH), utilizing Assembly resources (GHC 5,000 each, formerly 50 million old Ghana cedis) supplemented by GETFUND. He recounted his efforts in bringing Hon. Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, the then Minister of Education, to the school. Impressed by a student’s innovative use of recycled materials to create a radio station, Hon. Wiredu pledged support, leading to the establishment of Velvet Beam FM at ASECTECH.

Hon.Alberto Tekyi also recounted how the current administration has embarked on a significant wave of development projects in Amenfi West. He emphasized that key facilities have recently been completed, including a new Ghana Education Service (GES) office, a modern court complex, and new offices for the BAC and the Audit Service. In addition, a three-storey nine-classroom block has been added to Asankrangwa Secondary Technical School (ASECTECH), and a new multi-purpose boys’ dormitory at Asankrangwa Senior High School (ASANCO). A new Wassa Dunkwa polyclinic and a modern Ghana Fire Service office further enhance the NPP’s developmental projects in Amenfi West. These projects represent a substantial investment, improving educational facilities, public services, and healthcare infrastructure.

Finally, he underscored the extensive developmental achievements of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia administration in Amenfi West, arguing that their ongoing work, alongside Hon. Afrifa’s leadership, warrants continued support to maintain and build upon this momentum of progress. His speech offered a robust counter-narrative to criticism, firmly grounding his political claims in historical context and tangible accomplishments.
