Aggrieved residents of Akyem Abenase in the Akyemansa district of the Eastern Region have expressed their discontent with their chief, Nana Boame Ankra II.
According to the residents, since the enstoolment of Nana Boame Ankra II, no development has taken place in the town.
For the past seven years, they claim the chief has failed to contribute to the community’s development, leaving them feeling abandoned and frustrated.
The chief has been accused of mismanaging community resources, selling properties without benefiting the community, and failing to address basic needs like access to water.
The residents also revealed that they are struggling with inadequate access to water, with debts preventing pipe maintenance.
“Water bills are collected by the chief and his elders, but our pipes haven’t had water for almost four months due to debts,” the resident stated.
Some youths in the community are particularly disappointed, as they had expected their chief to be more supportive and understanding, given his own youthful background.
The situation has become so dire that some residents wish they didn’t have a chief at all.
Furthermore, the chief’s failure to account for ‘oman nsawa’ (a form of tribute or tax) payments has raised suspicions of embezzlement.
“Every time there is a funeral customer service, you will be required to pay the “oman nsawa,” but the fund is not used for any advancement.”.
The residents are threatening to withhold payment of ‘oman nsawa’ unless the chief provides accountability for the funds collected during his tenure.
