The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin says the Minority Caucus’s opposition to the nomination of Sam George as Minister for Communications.
The caucus cited concerns over his past language in criticising former President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 4, 2025, Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that Sam George’s previous remarks about these high-ranking figures were unbecoming of a ministerial nominee.
The Minority also insisted that Mr George was unable to provide documentation to support claims regarding sources of income among other factors.
The Minority Caucus in Parliament also distanced itself from the approval of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as Minister for Foreign Affairs, citing concerns over his conduct and responses during the vetting process.
During Tuesday’s parliamentary session, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin reiterated the caucus’ stance, stating that the Minority could not endorse Ablakwa’s appointment under the given circumstances.
To symbolically demonstrate their disapproval, First Minority Deputy Whip Habib Iddrisu poured water on Afenyo-Markin’s hands, which he washed—signifying the Minority’s detachment from the approval process.
Speaking on the matter, Afenyo-Markin declared: “Let me without equivocation state that we will proceed with the same abstinence. We abstain from his decision. It is solely a Majority call. All the sins of Ablakwa are upon their head.”
He further added: “This one, we are washing our hands to tell them that every sin at the Airport Hills and I am cleaning my hands to tell them that we are not part of the sins that he has omitted. All the Airport Hills sins are on their head.”
“If tomorrow he and his ORAL start pursuing you, it is on your head. But if he repents and comes back to this house, we will accept him.”
