The aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Achiase constituency in the Eastern region, Nana Kwabena Brako, has lambasted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for objecting to the 10 percent tax on winning bets.
On August 15, 2023, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) started enforcing a 10% withholding tax on lotteries and sports betting in order to raise money for the government.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) outlined a number of actions that will be taken against the government if the 10 percent tax on gambling winnings is not repealed in a statement signed by National Youth Organizer George Opare Addo on August 16.
Concerned about the NDC’s stance on the 10% tax on gambling and lotteries, Nana Kwabena Brako criticized the party for encouraging young gambling rather than encouraging them to concentrate on developing their business talents.
He asserts that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leaders, particularly the young leaders, ought to cease portraying Ghanaian youth as being wholly dependent on sports betting for existence.
He clarified that the NDC is against the government taxing sports bet wins, then it means they are in support of the youth not entering other fields of work for a better living instead of the bet, which doesn’t give much opportunity for money-making.
The NDC party has no better plans or programs for Ghanaian youth, he continued, as seen by its views on the government’s bet-win tax.
He also stressed that youth unemployment is a problem in Ghana, as it is in other developing nations, but he gave the assurance that the current administration is taking steps to address the problem.
He said that the young people are being prepared for the future, and if the NDC wants to lead the country, they should be discussing policies, not that there are hardships; young people should resort to betting, a game of luck, a game of chance.
