Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly criticized the increasing number of National Security searches targeting political opponents, calling them an assault on democracy.
In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Afenyo-Markin expressed outrage over recent searches of former officials of the Akufo-Addo administration, urging President John Dramani Mahama to take action.
“Abusing the Rights of political opponents is a fundamental assault on our democracy! Mr. President, you are widely perceived as a moderate, but these acts of abuse of power by your HAWKS… speak very negatively of your leadership. Please rein in your HAWKS now!” he wrote.
His concerns follow two major National Security searches in recent months:
- February 2025 – Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s home was searched by security operatives.
- March 2025 – Former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence was also searched, leading to allegations of theft by security officials.

These incidents have sparked outrage among opposition figures, who see them as part of a wider pattern of political persecution.
Afenyo-Markin also criticized government spokesperson, Shamima Muslim and deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, for allegedly defending the actions of National Security.
“They should not have been deployed to defend such unlawful actions by the Government!” he stated.
