Akufo-Addo Wants Chelsea’s Hudson-Odoi To Play For Ghana

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the Minister for Youth and Sports to explore the possibility of having Callum Hudson-Odoi switch nationality to play for the Black Stars.

This was after the Chelsea winger paid the President a courtesy visit at the Jubilee House on Monday.

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif was present at the meeting with the president tasking him to ensure that Hudson-Odoi makes a U-turn on his international career.

“Amongst others, I urged the Minister for Youth and Sports to explore the possibility of having Callum switch nationality, and play for the Black Stars,” posted on President’s official Facebook page.

Hudson-Odoi, born in London to Ghanaian parents, decided to represent England, having played for the youth teams of the European country.

Thus far, he has made three appearances for the Three Lions. However, he can switch and play for Ghana after Fifa revised its eligibility rules last year.

According to Fifa, players can now switch national teams provided they are eligible to represent them as long as they have played no more than three matches (including friendlies), none of the matches were in the final tournament of the FIFA World Cup or confederation competition, and they all happened before the player turned 21.

The attacker wasn’t even 20 when he played all three games for England, so there’s a huge possibility he can make a U-turn and don the Black Stars colours in future.

He was hoping to be named in England’s squad for the Euro 2020 but manager Gareth Southgate snubbed him, paving way for him to spend his summer holidays in Ghana.

The reception for him has been warm, thus far.

He was at the Accra Sports Stadium to watch his father’s former team, Hearts of Oak, draw 1-1 with Great Olympics in the Mantse derby and he received a customised jersey from the Phobians.

Hudson-Odoi had a successful 2020-21 season as Chelsea won their second Champions League trophy.
