Over 30,000 Unemployed Allied Health Professionals Demand Immediate Recruitment

The Coalition of Unemployed Allied Health Professionals Association of Ghana is furious over the government’s failure to employ thousands of qualified health professionals who have remained jobless since 2019.

These more than 30,000 unemployed allied health professionals are demanding immediate recruitment, clear timelines, and the implementation of a national policy to prevent further delays in their posting.

They include trained medical laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, and radiographers.

The aggrieved group decried what they described as neglect and systematic discrimination, despite ongoing critical shortages in public health facilities.

“It is unacceptable that highly trained professionals such as Medical Laboratory Scientists, Physiotherapists, Radiographers, Health Information Officers, Disease Control Officers, Community Mental Health Officers, Nutritionists, and Dietitians are idle at home while patients suffer and health workers are overstretched,” the group lamented.

“Ghana cannot continue to claim it is committed to universal health coverage while it sidelines the workforce needed to achieve it.”

The coalition also criticised the burden of mandatory licence renewal, which they are legally required to complete annually at their own expense, even though they are unemployed and not allowed to practise.

“This is deeply unfair and further exacerbates the emotional, psychological, and financial hardship that we are already burdened with,” they stated.

They also point to systemic discrimination in the recruitment process, highlighting how some health professionals are automatically posted after their internships, while allied health professionals are left behind.

“Allied health professionals are ignored, deleted, and neglected. Our role in the health system is critical, and we demand equal recognition and opportunity,” they concluded.
