Report By: Francis MENSAH (Adwenpa-Hene)
The Member of Parliament for Nhyaeso Constituency and former Deputy Minister of Finance, Stephen Amoah, has expressed his views on the newly introduced GHC 1 Energy Levy.
He stated that while he does not oppose the levy itself, he believes the government should apologize to Ghanaians for its previous harsh criticism of similar taxes under the previous administration.
Hypocrisy Allegation
According to MP Amoah, the government’s introduction of the GHC 1 Energy Levy is perceived as hypocritical, given its past stance on similar taxes. He argues that the current levy is even more burdensome than its predecessors, like the E-levy.
He stated that taxes are not evil and that he has nothing against the recently implemented GHC 1 Energy Levy.
However, he noted that the government should apologize to Ghanaians for its harsh criticism of the previous administration regarding similar taxes.
“The government should acknowledge its shift in position and offer an apology to the people”, he said.
Call for Accountability
MP Amoah’s comments highlight the need for accountability and transparency in governance.
He emphasizes that the government should be willing to admit when it has made mistakes or changed its stance on important issues, rather than trying to downplay or deny the inconsistencies.
