National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for the immediate removal of the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission (EC), describing the action as “long overdue” due to a series of electoral infractions.
Speaking on Maakye on Onua TV on Wednesday, June 11, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said he would continue to press for the removal of the Commission until a formal petition is filed to trigger the constitutional process.
“The fact is that the Commission in its current state is not fit for purpose,” he stressed. “Everybody knows.”
He cited the failure to hold elections in the Guan Constituency in 2020, which resulted in the people of Santrofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) going without representation in Parliament for four years. The situation was only remedied when Fred Agbenyo was elected in 2024.
The NDC Chairman also criticized the Commission’s handling of the Ablekuma North Parliamentary Elections, accusing it of procedural inconsistencies.
“From the Volta Region, then directly to Greater Accra Region,” he remarked, referring to irregularities in election administration.
“You can’t even declare results,” he added.
According to Mr. Nketia, election stalemates are a result of deliberate actions that violate electoral laws, not flaws in the system itself.
“If you have well-meaning people who want to really play by the rules, you can,” he asserted.
“No results can end in a stalemate without being able to declare them—unless someone wants to use their power and do something at variance with the law.”
Mr. Asiedu Nketia emphasized that the credibility of Ghana’s elections hinges on a professional, neutral, and law-abiding Electoral Commission.
