Avatime Senior High School (AVASEC) in the Ho West – District of the Volta Region ranked as low performing school: Stakeholders pay lips service.

In recent years, there has been growing concern over the quality of education in many schools across Ghana. One such school is Avatime Senior High School (AVASEC) located in the Ho West District of the Volta Region. Not too long, Minister of Education, Dr. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum threatened to close non – performing schools in the country for which AVASEC has been one of those ranked as a low-performing school, with a range of factors contributing to this unfortunate state of affairs.

One of the major challenges facing AVASEC is the lack of basic classroom infrastructure. The school has limited classroom space, with many classes overcrowded. This has a negative impact on the quality of teaching and learning, making it difficult for students to focus and absorb information effectively.

Another major challenge facing AVASEC is the lack of science facilities. Science is a critical subject in modern education, and students require access to well-equipped laboratories and other resources to learn effectively. Unfortunately, AVASEC lacks such facilities, which has a negative impact on students’ ability to learn and excel in science-related subjects. Unfortunately, the long old aged rickety or improvised lab which was put together to be holding the forts was smashed down 3months ago by wind storm during a downpour and the stakeholders visits with promises and vanished.

The lack of dormitories and toilet facilities is another major challenge facing AVASEC. Many students come from remote areas and have to travel long distances to attend school. Without dormitories, these students face significant challenges in finding suitable accommodation and often resort to sleeping in overcrowded classrooms converted or under makeshift shelters. The lack of adequate toilet facilities also poses a serious health risk to students, as it increases the likelihood of infections and other health problems.

Furthermore, AVASEC also lacks a proper dining hall, which makes it difficult for students to access nutritious meals. This has a negative impact on their health and well-being, as well as their ability to concentrate in class.

Finally, AVASEC also lacks an ICT laboratory. In today’s digitisational age, ICT skills are essential for success in many fields. Without access to an ICT laboratory, students are unable to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this area. Students in AVASEC have never touch a computer before yet the Vice President most recent announcement “we will soon change all textbooks with laptops”.  What will be their faith? Is the future of these young ones traded for no returns??

In conclusion, the low performance of AVASEC can be attributed to a range of factors, including the lack of classroom, science, dormitories, toilet facilities, dining halls, and ICT laboratories. It is crucial that stakeholders take urgent action to address these challenges and provide students with the resources and facilities they need to succeed. Only then can AVASEC and other schools like it in Ghana provide students with the quality education they need to thrive and succeed in the modern world.
