A viral image of a billboard suggesting that Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan intends to participate in the parliamentary primaries for the New Patriotic Party in the Bortianor Ngleshie-Amanfro constituency has been refuted by Samuel Anim Addo, who is known as Gyan’s agent and spokesperson.
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, Anim Addo reiterated Gyan’s previous statements that he currently has no plans to enter the political arena.
Responding to the image that was gaining traction on social media, Sammy Anim Addo made it clear that the reports were not accurate, stating “Not true.”
Despite Gyan’s repeated denials, his name continues to be associated with the Bortianor Ngleshie-Amanfro constituency seat due to his fame, philanthropic activities, and alleged connections to the ruling New Patriotic Party.
The incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency, Sylvester Tetteh, added fuel to the speculation when he was quoted as suggesting that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s team may be considering Gyan as a potential replacement for him. This could be due to Gyan’s perceived ties to Alan Kyerematen, a flagbearer hopeful within the New Patriotic Party.
Sylvester Tetteh’s alleged statement circulated on social media accuses supporters of Dr. Bawumia of backing Gyan to challenge him in the upcoming primaries due to his support for Alan Kyerematen. Tetteh responded assertively, expressing his readiness to face any challenges to his position.
In response to Tetteh’s accusations, a prominent member of the Bawumia camp, Dr. Gideon Boako, denied the allegations. He emphasized that he has never met Gyan in person and expressed his disappointment with the claims.
Dr. Boako stated that such tactics were not how they intended to run their campaign and that he was unaware of Gyan’s potential interest in parliamentary elections. He expressed his frustration by saying, “So this is how the likes of Sylvester Tetteh and supporters of Alan Kyeremanten want to run their campaign. I have never spoken to or met Baby Jet in person before. I have no idea he even wants to contest for parliamentary elections, let alone go and support him. SMH.”
