A group known as Innovative Teachers has petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, (CHRAJ), to investigate the procurement of laptops by the government.

President Akufo-Addo announced in his state of the nation address that the government will procure some 280,000 TM1 laptops for teachers to augment their work.

“I’m happy to announce that the government is facilitating the acquisition of 280,000 laptops for the members of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition for Concerned Teachers (CCT) this year.”

“I acknowledge the teacher is at the centre of every reform in the field of educated,” the president added.

Per the deal, the government will pay 70% of the cost of GHS1,550 with the teachers’ paying 30% through deductions from their salaries.

But the founder of Innovative Teachers says they sense acts of corruption in the procurement of the laptops.

The leader of the group, Stephen Desu said they believe the prices have been inflated.

“We served them notice of a complaint, and we are invoking the original jurisdiction of CHRAJ as in investigating suspected acts of corruption. Our suspicions tend, on the fact that we are producing 280,000 laptops and one would have thought that the number ought to have come with some level of relief for the taxpayer in terms of the cost and the 30% to be paid by teachers. So we think that the cost of GHS1,550 is on the high side. So we suspect the cost has been inflated.” he said.
